New Year – Same Goal

that I may know him and the power of his resurrection, and may share his sufferings, becoming like him in his death, that by any means possible I may attain the resurrection from the dead. Not that I have already obtained this or am already perfect, but I press on to make it my own, because Christ Jesus has made me his own. Brothers, I do not consider that I have made it my own. But one thing I do: forgetting what lies behind and straining forward to what lies ahead, I press on toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus.

(Philippians 3:10 -14)

At the beginning of each year, many of us make a list of the things we want to change in our lives. We often begin with the external things – personal style or body image. While goals for positive change in how we look and feel about ourselves are great, it is important to develop and maintain our goals for spiritual growth and maturity in Jesus Christ. As a disciple of Jesus Christ, that goal must remain regardless of what other circumstances change in our lives.

The Apostle Paul spoke about his goals to strengthen his fellowship with Jesus Christ, to be the representative of our Lord that he was called to be, to do the work for which he was created, and to live his life as a disciple of our Lord. Paul’s goal was one that required commitment, discipline and focus. To attain his goal, he would have to leave behind the past – his personal successes and failures.  He would have to hold tightly to the goal – to obtain the ‘prize of the high calling’ of God. He would have to be committed to attaining his goal – pressing forward with deliberate actions – fueled by his continued commitment to spiritual growth toward maturity as a disciple of Jesus Christ.

What about you?
